Abstract
Materials consisting of lead containing one or more oxides of lead, arsenic, tin, and antimony, or one or more of the metals arsenic, tin, and antimony, with or without sulphur and copper, for example battery plates, are refined by heating them above the melting point in presence of a reducing agent such as bituminous coal and a flux consisting of stable oxygen salts of an alkali metal and a fluoride, for example, sodium carbonate borax, and fluor spar, with or without the step of blowing the molten material with an oxygen-containing gas. In some cases the oxidation may be repeated in presence of fresh flux after removal of the first flux. The product may be an alloy of lead, antimony, and tin, from which tin and antimony may be successively removed leaving substantially pure lead.
