Abstract
296,557. Harris, H. Sept. 3, 1927. Dry processes of refining lead; alloys.-In a process for removing impurities from lead or lead alloys, the molten metal or alloy is brought into contact, at a temperature between its melting point and red heat, with a reagent comprising molten caustic alkali, with or without sodium chloride or other fusible chloride, to which has been added, or to which is gradually added, an oxide or oxides of lead or other metal or metals having less affinity for oxygen than that of the impurities to be removed. The oxide used may be in the form of oxide dross or mixed oxide drosses. The removal of different impurities or constituents may be preferential and successive; for example arsenic and tin may be successively removed from antimonial lead. Specifications 184,639 and 189,013 are referred to.
