Abstract

A synthetic resin is made by heating a phenol and a fatty oil, such as tung, linseed, perilla or soya bean oil, with hexamethylenetetramine at 190-200 DEG C. The hexamethylenetetramine may be used in sufficient quantity to combine with all the phenol, or other methylene-containing bodies such as formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde may be added. Coating compositions are made by dissolving the resin in turpentine, petroleum distillates, toluene, xylene, cyclohexanol, or other solvents. Driers such as cobalt, lead, or manganese resinates, tungates, or linoleates may be added. Suitable phenols are cresol, the complex tar acids boiling at 195-240 DEG C., and the phenols with two or more benzene rings, such as parahydroxy-diphenyl. Phenols containing coal tar may be used to form resins for black varnishes. Specifications 267,736 and 293,453, [both in Class 95, Paints &c.], are referred to.ALSO:A synthetic resin is made by heating a phenol and a fatty oil such as tung, linseed, perilla, or soya-bean oil, with hexamethylene-tetramine at 190-200 DEG C.
