Abstract

348,760. Printing. PINDER, T. F., Merion, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. March 10, 1930, No. 7786. [Class 100 (ii).] Drying-apparatus; paper-damping apparatus.- Offsetting in printing processes is prevented by subjecting both sides of a freshly-printed web first to a current of hot air and then to a current of cold air. The hot air has a polymerizing and oxidizing effect on the ink, and the oxidation is completed by mixing ozone with the cold air. After perfecting the web is again treated with a current of hot air, and, after cutting into sheets, is delivered to a receptacle wherein it is subjected to a spray of water mixed with ozone to bring the paper to its original moisture content. The web may be printed on one side by the plate and impression cylinders 2, 3 and then passed between curtains 9 mounted on spring rollers wherein it is subjected to the action of hot air delivered by a blower 10 to nozzles 12, the air blast travelling in the opposite direction to the web. The web then returns between other curtains 9 wherein it is treated with cold air laden with ozone delivered from a blower 16 to nozzles 18. After perfecting by the cylinders 4, 5 the web is again subjected to a blast of hot air, and is then cut into sheets 6 which are delivered to a receptacle 7 wherein they are sprayed from nozzles 22.
