Abstract

The catalytic conversion of secondary alcohols to ketones is carried out in presence of steam. The alcohols are preferably steam-distilled and the mixture of vapour and steam is passed over the catalyst at a temperature below the boiling point of the alcohol alone. The conversion of isopropyl alcohol, menthol, borneol, and cyclohexanol is specifically mentioned.
