Abstract
347,840. Pickling metals; pickling- tanks. MITCHELL, L. A., 37, Peter Street, Manchester. March 27, 1930, No. 9825. [Class 82 (ii).] In apparatus for pickling or rinsing articles in bulk, e.g. metal pipes, bars, sheets, pans, &c., the pickling basket, immersion drum, or bundle of articles to be pickled or rinsed is suspended from two swinging levers to which an up and down motion is given by two eccentrics so mounted on a common shaft that when one lever is raised the other is lowered, A shaft 13 between two pickling tanks 11, 12 carries two eccentrics 14, 15 offset with respect to one another through 180‹. The pickling baskets are carried by pairs of bellcrank arms 16 and 18, 17 and 19 loosely mounted on shafts 50, 51 respectively, the bell-crank arms having rollers 20 which rest on the eccentrics so that when the shaft 13 is rotated the pickling baskets are rocked in the tanks, the ends being raised and lowered alternately. A rope passing over pulleys 21 on the shafts 50, 51 carries a weight 23 suspended in a loop so that when the basket is removed from the arms, the shafts are rotated bringing fixed levers 47 into contact with projections 48 on the arms and so raising the arms to the positions indicated in broken lines, Fig. 1. Elastic members 24 are provided on the end walls of the tank against which the basket can strike during the rocking motion. When treating pipes, rods, &c., these are suspended in chains, Fig. 4, and curved standards 26 with points 27 are provided in the tanks, circular links in the chains being placed on the points 27 so that the bundles of articles are divided into two parts. The tanks are preferably made of granite slabs, the joints of the base and side slabs 41, 42, Fig. 3, being provided with tongues and grooves of such a shape that inner and outer caulking grooves 43, and channels 44 are formed when the slabs are in position. The grooves 43 are caulked with acid-resisting metal wool, e.g. lead, and secured with moulding sand and the channels 44, after drying with heated compressed air, are filled with molten acid-resisting metal.
