Description
March 14, 1933. E. T. BENNINGTON CARRIER FOR OVENS, FURNACES, OR THE LIKE Filed Jan. 15 1927 AWJ Patented Mar. 14, 1933 UNITED STATESHEATENTYOFFICE EARL T. BENNINGTON, OF CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CLEVELAND CRANE & ENGINEERING COMPAN Y, OF \VICKLIFFE, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO CARRIER FOR OVENS, FURNACES, on THE-LIKE;
Application filed .Tanuary'15, 1111-127. jsaia no.- 161,382.
This invention relates to carriersfor ovens, furnaces or the like and has for its object to provide a carrier system in which the articles subjected to heat treatment are supported from overhead carriers traveling on a track above the top of the furnace or oven chamber by means of load supporting members depending from the carriers and extending through a longitudinal slot in the top wall of the chamber and in which means is provided for protecting the carriers from the heat of the furnace and for preventing the escape of an excessive amount of heat from the oven or furnace. V
The invention herein disclosed is adapted primarily for use in connection with enameling furnaces, particularly for baking paint or the like onto the surfaces of articles coated with the same.
The accompanying drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain .means embodying the invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of the various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be employed.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an oven or furnace chamber with a row of carriers passing over the same.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the oven or furnace chamber showing one of the carriers in end elevation.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of one of the carriers clear of the oven or furnace.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, an oven or furnace chamber 1 is provided with a slot 2 in its top wall extending the full length thereof anddirectly over the slot 2 there is mounted a monorail track 3 upon which carriers supporting articles to be passed through the furnace or oven travel. Each carrier has a frame 4 and supporting wheels 5 arranged in pairs to travel upon the opposite flanges of the monorail track 3. Pivotally suspended from the center of each carrier frame 4 there is a depending load carrying rod 6 which is adapted to extend downwardly through the slot 2 from the top of the oven or furnace chamber and which has at its lower end a hook? by means of which an' article to be passed through the oven or furnace may be supported. A collar 8 is attached to each of'the rods 6 at a point such that while the carriers are passing over an oven or furnace the collar will be somewhat below the upper surface of the top wall ofthe' chamber. Slidably' mounted upon each of the rods 6 is a cover plate 9 which is of a width greater than the slot 2 and of a length substantially equal to the length of the carrier frame 4.
. Theends of the furnace or oven chamber will be provided with suitable doors or openings through which the articles suspended from the carriers may pass into or out of the furnace. In passing the articles throughthe furnace the carriers are pushed one against another and the cover plates 9 rest upon the top of the chamber over the slot 2 and since the cover plates 9 are of substantially the same lengths as the carriers the plates will 'be dragged end to end along the top of the chamber and will form a cover for the slot 2 protecting the carriersfrom the heat of the furnace or oven and also preventing excessive escape of heat from the interior of the oven or furnace chamber. When the carriers are traveling upon a portion of the trackway from the furnace or oven the plates 9; are supported upon the collars 8 and as the carriers pass over the front end of a furnace or oven chamber the plates are raised off of the collars and slide upon the top of the chamber. To
facilitate the lifting of the plates as the car-V riers come to the portion of the track directly over the front end of a furnace or oven chamber each plate is bent upwardly at its forward end 10 to engage with an inclined portion 11 at the end of top wall of the furnace chamber so that the cover plates will readily ride up onto the top of the oven or furnace chamber. To prevent turning of the plates 9 upon the rods 6 a portion of the rods upon which the plates slide may be made square in cross section to fit a square opening in the p ate.
.Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim is: I
1. A carrier for furnaces, ovens or the like,
having supporting wheels adapted to travel on an overhead track, a frame, load supporting members depending from'the frame, a cover plate of substantially the same length as the frame slidably mounted on said members, one end of said plate being upwardly inclined, and means on said members intermediate the ends thereof for supporting said plate.
2. In combination with an oven having a slot through the top wall thereof, a track above said slot, carriers on said track having depending load supporting members adapted to enter said slot as the carriers move upon the track toward and over said oven, said carriers comprising vertically movable cover plates, cooperating surfaces upon the forward ends of the cover plates and the entrance end of the oven for camming said plates onto the top of the oven, whereby the engagement between the plates and the top of the oven serves to close the slot therein, and means for limiting the downward movement of the plates upon the carriers when the latter leave said oven.
3. In combination with an oven having a slot through the top wall thereof, a track above said slot, carriers on said track having depending load supporting members adapted V to enter said slot as the carriers move upon the track toward and over said oven said carriers being adapted to abut each other end to end and comprising vertically movable cover plates one for each carrier, said plates being substantially coextensive with said carriers in a lengthwise direction, cooperating surfaces upon the forward ends of the cover plates and the entrance end of the oven for camming said plates onto the top of the oven, whereby the engagement between the plates and the top of the oven serves to close the slots therethrough, and means on the carriers adapted to support said plates at a level slightly lower than the level of the oven top surface.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiiz: my
signature.
EARL T. BENNINGTON.
