[Class 82 (ii)] Metal rods, tubes, bars, &c. to be subjected to treatment with liquid, e.g. to be pickled, washed, or swilled, are placed in a carrier which is adapted to coact with devices in the treatment bath so that on lowering the carrier the mass of rods &c. is deformed, redistributed, or disturbed, so that the liquid has access to all parts of the mass and any gases produced can readily escape. In the form shown, three long narrow tanks, an acid tank a, a washing tank b, and a neutralizing tank c, are arranged side by side, each tank being provided with a number of spaced members e engaged with ribs or rails f on the sides of the bath and having their upper surfaces cut away to present a narrow W-formation. The carrier for the rods &c. comprises a number of cradles v approximately V-shaped in form suspended by arms w from a girder x which is provided with a bridle y for attachment to a crane hook z. The rods &c. are placed in the V-shaped cradles and the carrier is lowered into the bath, the rods being lifted out of the cradles and redistributed in the depressions of the W-shaped members e. The carrier is preferably jigged up and down so that the rods are repeatedly redistributed, being alternately collected on the cradles v and on the members e. The jigging in tanks a and b is effected by the provision at each end of the tanks of a pair of levers h joined at their ends by links s which, at their upper ends terminate in, or support, forked seatings t in which the girder x of the carrier can be seated. The levers are oscillated from a shaft o by crank mechanism. A carrier is first jigged in the acid tank a and then transferred to the seatings t above the washing tank b, a fresh carrier being placed on the seatings t above the tank a. After treatment in the tank b the carrier is transferred to the neutralizing tank c. The cradles v have flat bottoms v<2> so that the carrier can be placed on the ground for loading, unloading, &c. The form of the cradles and of the members e may be varied, for example, the cradles, instead of being V-shaped, may be semicircular, parabolic, &c.
