Abstract
347,306. Typewriters. PILGRIM, G. J. M., 204, Melfort Road, Thornton Heath, Surrey. Jan. 30, 1930, No. 3260. [Class 100 (iv).] Sheet feeding and guiding arrangements.-In an arrangement for facilitating the introduction of sheets at the front and rear of the platen, the rear sheet is guided around the platen by flexible bands, and the front sheet is guided into the space between the platen and an apron by a guide which is movable into and out of position. Feed-rollers may be moved into and out of contact with the platen by means including a shaft associated with springs so arranged that the shaft is free from spring-pressure during the movements of the feed-rollers towards and from the platen. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8, an apron j for the platen a is secured to a spring-urged shaft k having an arm l<6> connected by a slotted link l<3> to a crank-pin l<5> on a shaft l provided with a hand-lever m which is moved forwards to depress the apron. A spring- catch r<4> for locking the hand-lever engages a bar r<5> and is carried by a release lever s having limited movement on the hand-lever. A guide o is pivotally suspended from arms o<2> on a shaft p geared by pinions p<2> .. p5 to the shaft l. An extension q of the guide engages a slot q<2> in a link q<3> pivoted to a rocking arm q<4> which is normally held in contact with a stop q<5> by a spring. The guide is normally in the position shown in Fig. 6, and on forward movement of the hand-lever is moved rearwards into contact with the platen and is then moved downwards between the platen and the type-guide h into the position shown in Fig. 7 for the purpose of guiding a sheet or card introduced at the front. The guide has a distance-piece q<8> for engaging the platen. Feedrollers r are carried by arms r<1> which can rock on the shaft l and are connected to collars on the shaft by means of coiled springs which apply pressure to the arms and feed-rollers only when the latch r<4> engages the bar r<5>. On depression of the lever s, the shaft is turned slightly by the coiled springs, and the arms are raised slightly to release the feedrollers, the movement being limited by contact of shoulders t<2>, Fig. 6, on the arms with shoulders t<1> on collars t on the shaft. During forward and rearward movement of the hand-lever, the arms are raised and depressed, and the coiled springs cease to exert pressure. Flexible bands z for guiding the rear summary-sheet around the platen are secured to a shelf z<1>. A shelf v is provided with a sidegauge v<1> for the front sheet A. When the handlever is moved forwards, the apron is depressed, the guide is moved into position, and the feed-roller arms are raised. The sheet A is then introduced and adjusted with reference to the summary sheet, and on return of the hand-lever and re-engagement of the latch, the feed-rollers and apron are restored, and the guide is returned. Printing-line indicators.-An indicator is moved into and out of position when the feed-rollers are released and restored. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8, an indicating-strip w is secured to pivoted arms x which are raised by a spring y2 and co-operate with cams y, y<1> on the hand-lever m. Normally, as described above, the latch r<4> engages the bar r<5>, and the cam y retains the strip in depressed position and out of the path of the types. When the latch is released, the arms x rise to engage stops y3 and the strip moves into position. When the hand-lever is moved forwards, the cam y<1> depresses the arms, and the strip is moved out of the path of the guide o.
