Abstract
441,387. Typewriters. HOFFMANN, E., 7, Weinligstrasse, Leipsic, Germany. July 18, 1934, No. 21071. Convention date, July 18, 1933. [Class 100 (iv)] Index type - wheel machines; aligning for impression.-A machine of the kind comprising a setting-member which is movable in a direction parallel to the platen and is provided with a rack co-operating with a pinion on the typewheel is constructed in the following manner. The type-wheel 10, Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted on a shaft 12 carried by a slide 13 which is mounted in a guide 14 on the base 1. A pinion 11 coupled to the type-wheel co-operates with a rack 9 secured to arms 8 on a sleeve 7 which is freely mounted on a rod 5 arranged in a housing 2. The type-drum is rotated for characterselection and moved rearwards for impression by moving laterally and depressing a setting knob 19 carried by a rod 20 which is mounted on one of the arms 8. A character-pointer 6 on the sleeve 7 is set with reference to indexplates 57, 58 which are arranged on the sloping front of the housing and are separated by a window or slot 59. When the type-wheel is moved rearwards, an aligning-pin 16 on the rack 9 engages a stationary rack 17. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the following subjectmatter ; to increase visibility of the typing, the type-wheel is formed as an inverted, truncated cone. The framework and working parts of the machine are made from synthetic resin or the like. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Case-shift mechanism.-Shiftkeys 52, 53 are secured to a rocking bail 50 engaging the type-wheel 10. Letter-spacing mechanism.- On depression of the knob 19, a letter-spacing pawl 40 on the slide 13 co-operates with a rack 37 on the carriage 32. For effecting spacing without impression, the knob is turned, before being depressed, and a stop 22 in connection with the rod 20 is thereby depressed, so that on depression of the knob the rack 17 obstructs the stop and shortens the stroke of the typewheel. Back-spacing mechanism.-A pawl 42, Fig. 2, is freely mounted on a pin 44 and is coupled by a flexible member 47 to a back-spacing key 46. On depression of the key, the pawl is rocked into engagement with the rack and is then moved laterally. Sheet feeding and guiding arrangements.- An apron carrying feed-rollers is pivoted on the carriage 32 and can be rocked to release the sheets by depressing an extension which is pivoted on the carriage and abuts on the back of the apron. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The spools are provided with gears 25, Fig. 2, co-operating with pawls 24 mounted on eccentrics on a spring- urged rock-shaft 23 having an arm 26 in the path of the type-wheel shaft 12. The rockshaft is moved longitudinally to reverse the feed.
