In the drawings, an ad machine known as the Burrou hs mac e 10, is illustrated, said machine -being rovided with the usual keys 11, that are epressed to set Vthe mechanism,v in adding or computing. The machine contains a support 14, for the carriage 15, said carriage being slidably mounted upon the support 14, as usual. The carriage has an oscillato platen supporting frame 15, whichis fdly the remainder of the carriage at 16, whereby it may be moved. into either of two printing positions. lThe frame 15", of said carriage supports the platen 12, in suitable bearings whereby the platen may rotate therein.
Under normal conditions the platen lies in position'to be printed upon by the tytpewriting attachment, and mechanism as been provided for causing said platen to assume the position wherein the printing `mechanism of the adding machine may print upon the platen. Y A simple means for accomplishing this result comprises a connectionbetween the platen or its support and some part of the operating 'mechanism of the adding machine, as for instancethe operating crank 17 whereby when said crank is drawn forward, to record in the adding Amachine and print, the platen is drawn forwardinto'printing position relative to the printing mechanism of the adding machine.

Above the carriage and platen are located the type bars of the ty writing mechanism, and th are supportedxin such manner that when t e typebars are swung down, the type strike upon the u per side of the platen. The typewriting mechanism employed, for the purpose of illustration, is substantially that of the 5 Oliver typewriter, althoug any other suitable mechanism may of course besubstituted in its lace. The type bar frame 23, is supper from the frame 10, of the adding machine as by a bracket 23, which is bolted or otherwise secured to the adding machine frame and the type bars 24, are vpivotally sustained in said type bar. frame in the usual manner.
The typewriter keys 29, are located at the frontend of the machine and are operativel connected with the type bars 24, in suc manner that the said type bars are swung down when the keys are depreed. One

In the operation of the adding inachne, the usual conditions prevail, .that is, the keys 11, are pressed in such va way as to represent the digits of .the number to be recorded, when the crank 17, is pulled to the forward position by means of the handle 19,-as shown in the dotted lines (Fig. l) and in this way the number is both recorded in the counter of the addin machine and printed upon the platen 12, w ich is brought `to the printing position by means of connection 20.. On the return of the handle, the platenv is forced to its backward position whereby the printing line of the adding machine is caused to register with the printing line of the typewriter, so that in case any explanation or dates or numbers, not to be computed, be written, the type lbars will print upon the platen as in the usual way with a typewriter, since the platen now becomes the typewriter platen. The carriage, which combines the functions of both addingmachine and typewriter, preserves the movements of the adding machinethat. is to say the adding machine carriage may be moved fromy right to left Aor the reverse or the platen may be moved back in order to bring to view the printing line, and said carriage, has added to it the usual t writer escapement and tabulating mechanism (not shown) since I make no claim for any specific escapement'or tabulating mechanism. Should a word or more of explanation ,or' a namebe required in the record, the same is written by using -keys 29, the same as keys are used upon any typewriter when the type bars 24, by means of the rock shafts 28, will-be driven to the printing line as in the usual manner on lany typewriter. .Ishow inthe drawings the particular form of type bar mechanism employed on vthe Oliver ty ewriter, b t I do Vnot confine m self to '-t 40 since the essence, of my invention. consists in the position'of the typewriter keys -with relation to theadding machine keys and the novel means by which the typewriter bars are caused to operate together with the movement of the platen, so that either machine may work with the same freedom-as though it were not connected to the other, and at the same' time the workof the two may be combined in sucha way as to do all of the work or any of the work which may now be rformed by both machines acting indepen ently in succession upon the same sheet. The importance of this work of the two machines in conjunction with each other `can hardly be realized as it not only saves the time and labor of printing upon .the same sheet in one machinev and then transferring it to another, but it avoids the greater disadvantage of the source of error which exists where explanations are to be written for items already listed, or the reverse.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination with an adding machine having an operating shaft, of a typel writin machine and a platen common to the printing mechanism of said adding machine and' typewriting machine, said p latcn 75 being operatively connected to said operating shaft of the adding machine, whereby it is brought into printing position relative t0 either machine by the movements of said shaft.
2. The combination with an adding machine having a rocking element, of a typewriter laten common to the printing mechanism o said adding machine and typewriter, said platen being operatively connected with said rocking element of said adding machine, whereby it is moved into printing position relatively to either machine by the movement of said rocking element. 90
3. The combination with an adding machine, its operating shaft, and a ty ewriting machine, of a movable carriage aving a laten common to the printing mechanism o said adding machine and typewriting machine, and operative connections between said platen and saidV o erating shaft of the adding machine capa le of moving said platen into printing position relative to either machine when said shaft is actuated through its arc of movement.
4. The combination with anvadding ma chine, its operating crank, and a typewriting machine, of a movable carriage having a platen common to t e printin mechanism of both machines, an a link, idably connected to said carria e and actuated by said operating crank of t e adding machine, the movement of said link from one position to into printing position relative to either machine.
5. The combination with an adding machine, its operating shaft, and a typewriting-machine, of a traveling carriage, and a laten common to the 'printing mechanism o bot-h machines said platen being carried by the carriage, and operatively connected with said shaft of the addi machine, whereby it may be moved into `t e printing position for either machine.
6. The combination of an addin machine and the operating shaft thereo a typewriter, a traveling carriage having an oscillatory frame, a platen, common to the printing mechanism of both machines` journaled' upon said' frame, and a link slidably connected to a longitudinal member of said frame and actuated by said'o rating shaft `of the adding machine, where y said platen is brought into printing position relative to either machine by the action of said operating shaft.
7. The combination with an adding machine, and a typewriting machine associated therewith, of an oscillatory frame, a laten, common to both machines, journalc upon said frame and normally held in printing position with respect to the printing mechanism of the ty Jewriter, and a link operatively connecte to said oscillatory frame and extending to the operatin crank of the adding machine, whereby sai platen may be moved into printing position with res t to the printing mechanism of the ad ing' machine when said operating crank is pulled forward to record and print with the adding machine. y

The combination with an adding machine, of typewri'ting mechanism having type bars supported on its rear end, a platen common to the printing mechanism of the adding machine and typewriting mechanism, said typewriting mechanism having type keys located at the front of the adding machine, and rock shafts supported on the sides of the adding machine and operatively connecting the type keys with the type bars of the typewriting mechanism.

13. The combination with an adding machine having a platen, of typewriting mechanism to write upon said platen; the platen being normally in position to receive impressions from the type bars; said adding machine having a eneral operator, and a connection from said general operator to said platen to shift the latter to osition to. receive impressions from the adiiing machine tvpes.
14. The combination with an adding machine having a. platen, of typewriting mechanism to write upon said platen; the platen being normally in position to receive impressions from the type bars; said adding machine having a general operator, and a connection from said general operator to said vplaten to shift the latter to position to receive impressions from the adding machine types, and to return the platen to typewriting position after receiving the impressions of the adding machine types.
15. The combination with an adding machine having a set of keys, a general operator handle and a platen, of a set of alphabet or typewriting keys, a set of type bars operable by said alphabet keys and mounted to 105 write upon said platen, and a connection from said general operator handle to said platen to return the latter to'typewriting position` at the conclusion of a cyclel of movements of the handle.
16. The combination of an adding machine, a typewriting mechanism having a platen in common with the printing mechanism of the adding machine, said adding machine having an operating crunk or device, 116 and mechanism operatively connected with Said operating crank, whereby the platen is shifted into printing postion relatively to each other the adding machine or the typewriter printing mechanism.
