Be it known that 1, CHARLES K. Prcnnns, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Type-Writing,Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting ma chines and it consists of the novel construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts herein shown, described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to produce a typewriting machine comprising a platen or paper holder in combination with a se- I ries of trains of wrlting devices each of which is composed of a single key or actuating lever and a type-bar pivoted directly to the key or actuating lever. H
Another object is to produce a machine of the character mentioned comprising a series of two-piece writing trains, one piece in each of which trains constitutes akey lever and the other piece in each train being the writing or impression member, in combination with a paper support or holder, and means'for moving the paper relative to the writing or impression members as required for letter spacing, v
-Anot-her object is to produce a machine of the character last referred to, having means for moving the paper in the line spacing movements.
A further object is to combine tabulating mechanism with the recording mechanism whereby the position of the paper and recording mechanism relative to each other may be shifted or changed as required for producing tabulated records.
Other objects will. appear in the following description in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings illustrating one form of my invention and in which:

Fig. 2 is a view of the keyboard and platen and the escapement controlling the letter spacing operations of the platen. Fig. 3 is a side or end view of the paper carriage or platen mech anism. Figs. 4i and 5 are perspective views of two escapement members supported by the paper carriage. Figs. 6 and 7 are sectional views illustrating the action of the escapement in the lateral operations of the mon point in their carriage. Fig." 8 is a view of one of the carriage supporting members.
I have illustrated my invention in a machine of the type known as front strike typewriters, though it is obvious that it may as well be embodied many other type of machine, and particularly in any of the visible writing machines.
The side frames 1 and two inner frames 2 uphold two frames 3. Between the frames 2 and the platen are two arcuate frames l, arranged in arcs of a circle whose axis is the printing point. An arcuate rod 5 is mounted in each frame l and a series of type-bars 6 extend into notches in said frames and are pivoted on said rods 5, said type-bars being operable to strike at a comrecording operations. A seriesof type-bar actuating members, or key stems 7 extend through slots in the frames 3 and have their inner ends pivoted, respectively, to'the type-bars 6 in such manner that, when said key stems are pushed inwardly, they will actuate the type-bars and throw their type ends against the platen to record. is with their type ends forward; the keys also being forward, the parts being held in such position by springs 8 connecting the keys with the frames 3. Lugs 9 on the keystems abut against the frames 3 and limit forward'movement of the keys.
In the embodiment illustrated the paper carriage includes. two frames 10 connected by two rods 11 which operate laterally in bearings in vertical extensions 12 of the inner frames 2. It will be obvious by reference to Fig. 1 that the central location of the frames 12 will. allow lateral movement of the paper carriage sui'hcient for all purposes required of the machine. A platen shaft 13 is mounted in bearings in the of the carriage frames 10'and a shaft 17 is supported by said arms parallel withthe The idle position of the type-bars leftward relative to the operator and a spring 23 interposed between said sleeve and a projection 21 on said shaft actuates the sleeve leftward. A tooth 25 on the sleeve extends downward slightly in. advance of the tooth 20. A rack bar 26 has an arm 27 attached to each end thereof and said arms have trunnions extending into hearings on .the side frames 1. A bell crank lever 28 is attached to each of the trunnions on the arms 27 and has horizontal arms resting on top of the side frames. 1, preventing the rack from moving forward beyond its idle position. Springs'29 connecting the levers 27 to the side frames 1 hold the parts in their idle position, the idle position being with the rack 26 in engagement with the tooth 25 on the sleeve 21. When in such position the tooth 20 is rearwardfrom'the rack bar. On the forward ends of the stems or bars 7 the key heads or terminals 30 are attached. A plate 31 is interposed between the key heads and the frames 3, and has slots for the bars 7. Each plate 31 has a rearwardy extending portion 32 which is pivoted to arms 33 of equallength, which are attached to vertical shafts or trunnions 34. At each side of the machine there is a link 35, said links at their forward ends being pivoted to arms 36 on the shafts 3 1. The rear ends of the links have slots 37 (Fig. 3) which receive studs on the levers 28, said studs being at the forward ends of the slots when the machine is idle. lVhen pushed rearward the links oscillate the rack .26 moving it rearward out of connection with the tooth 25 and into connection with the tooth 20. This occurs whenever any key bar is struck to cause its type-bar to print. As soon as the rack 26 is disengaged from the tooth 25 the sleeve 21 is released from restraint and is actuated leftward by the spring 23, until stopped by the projection 22. This movement is permitted by the slot in the sleeve 21 through which the tooth 20 pro ects, and the scope of such movement is substantially equal to the distance between the vertical edges of two adjacent teeth-on the rack 26. The platen carriage is actuated, as usual, by a motor or spring device (not shown) so that when the carriage is held by the tooth 25 thespring 23 is compressed. When any one of the keys 30 is operated the rack 26, through the medium of the link 35 and the other connections,"
will be oscillated out of engagement with the tooth 25 and into engagement with the toothv 20, thereby permitting the spring 23 to move the sleeve 21 against the projection 22. When the key is released the recording train is returned to idle position by its spring 8, While the rack 26 and the other parts of the escapement train are returned to their idle positions by the springs 29, thereby again moving the rack-26 into en gagement with the tooth 25 and out of engagement with the tooth'20. The stronger motor (not shown) which actuates the platen then compresses the spring 23 and draws the carriage leftward the distance of one letter space which is regulated by the length of the slot in the sleeve 21 through which the tooth 20.0perates.
On each of the plates 31 a space key 37 is attached, whereby the plates may be operated as required to operate the escapement for word spacing. The operation of the parts when the space key is operated is obvious fromthe above description.
A lever 38 is attached to each end of the shaft 17 whereby said shaft may be oscillated to carry the teeth 20 and 25 backward beyond the rack 26 (Fig. I) to permit free lateral movement of the carriage in either direction. Reengagement of the escapement members is effected by the springs 19 after release of the lever 38.
I have not illustrated the ribbon mecha-' nism and the other parts used with all typewriting machines since it is obvious that any of the various species of such mechanisms may readily be incorporated in this machine.
The parts shown and described are intended for use in combinationwith any of the operative mechanisms necessary to produce a complete typewriter.
It is obvious also that there may be many variations from the specific construction shown and described without in the least departing from the spirit and scope of my invention for which reason I do not restrict myself to specific details of construe tion or combination.

1. In a typewriting machine, a laterally movable paper carriage, a revoluble platen mounted in said carriage, type bars arranged to operate upon a visible portion of said platen, key stems havingtheir inner ends pivoted to said type bars, whereby said type bars may be operated to record, plates actuated by inward movement of said key stems, escapemcnt mechanism controlling said carriage, connections whereby said plates will operate said escapement mechanism while said platen is held against revolving, and means vfor returning said type bars and key stems to idle position after each operation.
2. In a-typewriting machine, a carriage, a
support upon which said carriage is laterally movable, a revoluble platen mounted in said carriage, means for revolving said carriage to feed paper in line spacing, escapement mechanism controlling lateral movement of said carriage type bars arranged to operate upon said platen, key stems having their inner ends pivoted to said type bars and having finger buttons attached to the outer ends thereof, whereby said key stems be manually operated to actuate said type bars, plates movable by said key stems during manual operation thereof, connections from said plates for operating said escapement mechanism, actuating devices for restoring. said plates to idle position after each operation thereof, and springs for restoring said key stems to idle position.
3. In a' typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, escapement mechanism, type-bars, key-stems pivoted to said type-bars, plates actuated by said keystems, and connections from said plates whereby said plates will operate said escapement mechanism while said platen is held against revolving,substantially as specified.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a. laterally movable paper carriage and a revoluble platen mounted in said carriage and having the recording space thereon visible to the operator, of escapement mechanism controlling lateral movement of said carriage, type bars, longitudinally slidable key stems having their inner ends pivoted to said type bars, plates having openings through which said key stems ex tend, elements on said key stems engaging said plates, connections from said plates to said escapement mechanism, whereby the escapelnent mechanism will be operated by the manual movement of said key stems, devices for restoring said key stems to idle position after each manual operation, and additional devices for restoring said plates to idle position after each operation.
'5.- In a type writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a revoluble platen mounted in said carriage, manually operable means for rotating said platen in line spacing, series of type bars, series ,of longitudinally slidable key stems having their inner ends pivoted to said type bars respectively, supports in which said key stems are longitudinally movable, lettered finger buttons attached h0\ said key stems, whereby said stems may be moved bodily in the direction of their length to operate said type bars, a movable element engaging all of the key stems of one series, an additional movable element engaging all of saidkey stems of the other series, mechanism controlled by both of said elements for moving said carriage and platen laterally elfectively to move a straight line surface of said platen across the printing point, and means to prevent rotation of said platen during the lateral movement aforesaid.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, manually operable means for rotating said carriage in line spacing, series of type bars, supports, a series of key stems slidably carried by each of said supports'and having their inner ends pivoted p directly to said type bars, respectively, finger buttons attached to said key stems, whereby said stems and said type bars may be operated, means for returning said key stems and said type bars to idle position after each operation, a movable element engaging all of the key stems of one series, another movable element engaging all of said key stems of the other series, means whereby any key stem of either series will move the corresponding movable element, mechanism controlled by both of said elements for moving said carriage and platen effectively to move a straight line surface of said platen across the'printing point, and means in said carriage for preventing rotation of said platen during the lateral movement aforesaid.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a laterally movable paper carriage, series of type bars, series of key stems pivoted to said type bars, respectively, a plate engaging all of said key stems of one series, another plate engaging all of said key stems of the other series, each of said plates being movable by any one of the key stems of the series to which said plate belongs, escapement mechanism controlling lateral movement of said carriage, connections from each of said plates to said escapement mechanism, and actuating devices for restoring said plates and said key stems to idle position. In a typewriting machine, in combina tion, a carriage, a revoluble platen mounted in said carriage, type-bars arranged to operate upon said platen, key-stems pivoted to said type-bars, escapement mechanism controlling said carriage, plates actuated by said key-stems, connections from said plates whereby said plates will operate said escapement mechanism while said platen is held against revolving, and means for returning said type-bars and key-stems to idle position after each operation, substantially as specified.
9. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a revoluble platen in said carriage, ieans in said. carriage holding said platen from revolving, escapement mechanism controlling said carriage, typebars arranged to operate upon said platen,
