Abstract

347,177. Electric signalling systems. CHADBURN'S (SHIP) TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. and BAMFORD, A. C., Cyprus Road, Bootle, Lancashire. Jan. 15, 1930, No. 1400. [Class 40 (i).] In electric telegraphic apparatus for use on ships or for similar purposes, the transmitter has two sets of order indications, one for " ahead " orders, the other for " astern " orders, while the receiver has only one set of order indications to be used in conjunction with an "ahead" or an "astern" indication. In the construction shown, the transmitter is provided with a contactor which is adapted to engage a ring 3 connected to a source of current, a pair of contacts 2 adapted to complete the circuits of lamps 8 at the receiver indicating the directions " ahead " and "astern," and spaced contacts 1 corresponding to a " stop '"order indication and two sets of speed indications, one set for " ahead " and one for "astern " directions. The order contacts are connected in pairs by wires 10, and each pair is connected by a wire 0 through lamps 6 to a corresponding order contact 5 on the receiver. The contacts 5 are adapted to be engaged by a circular contactor (not shown) which is formed with a gap and is adapted to form a bridge between the contacts 5 and a contact 14, the latter being connected by a wire 16 to a relay 17 controlling the operation of sound-signalling apparatus 18 at the transmitter and receiver. Movement of the transmitter handle to an order position causes operation of the sound-signalling apparatus and illumination of a pair of lamps 6. One set of lamps 8 is also illuminated except in the case when the "stop" order is given. Operation of the reply mechanism at the receiver brings the gap in the contactor over the contact 5 previously in circuit, so that the circuit is opened and the lamps 6 are extinguished. If it is desired that the lamps 6 should remain alight until a succeeding order is transmitted, the contactor of the receiver is provided with a contact in the gap and with a second contact engaging a ring 5x so that operation of the reply mechanism results only in the cessation of the audible signals. In a modification the receiver, of circular form, is connected to an additional receiver in the form of a large indicator of rectangular shape. Specifications 19100/11, [Class 40 (i), Electric signalling systems &c.], and 347,294 are referred to.
