Abstract
<PICT:0346397/III/1> Relates to a machine for coating one surface only of a boot or shoe part by dipping, particularly for applying a volatile solvent to the cemented surface of a sole which is to be fixed to the overlasted upper by adhesion. The sole 48 is placed with the cemented face downwards on a grid 14 which is normally held by springs in the raised position shown and can be depressed, as by a treadle, till the grid rests upon the bottom of the dipping vessel 10 with the lower surface of the sole below the liquid level 12. The bars of the grid are formed with notches 15, 17 to allow escape of air and to prevent surging and splashing. The grid is depressed by a presser-plate 22, normally held raised by springs, and the presser-plate serves to flatten the sole, if the latter is previously moulded, and to hold it against the grid. The sole is inserted into the vessel 10 through an opening 46 well below the top of the chamber. This arrangement ensures an atmosphere of solvent vapour within the vessel, and after the sole has been dipped and the grid allowed to rise, it may be left in the vapour in order to effect a uniform softening of the adhesive. The vessel 10 is supported on adjustable legs 78 at one end so that the grid can be set horizontal. The liquid is kept automatically at a constant-level 12 by means of an inverted supply-cam 50 with an outlet 56 arranged out of centre in the cap in register with an opening 60 in a lower cover 88. The cover 58 is held by the head of a pull-rod 66--and the cam may be turned about its axis to open and close the opening 56, but the pull-rod may be withdrawn to permit the cam and the cover 58 to turn together whilst the neck of the cam is screwed up or down in a collar 54 to adjust the liquid level 12.
