[Class 129] [Also in Group XVII] An automatic beverage maker, such as a coffee maker, comprises a lower container 10 in which water, after being heated up and a substantial pressure raised above the water level 17, is transferred rapidly up a tube 30 into an upper container 11 where it passes through the coffee. Cooling of the lower container creates a partial vacuum therein, and the beverage passes into the container 10, whence it is dispensed after removal of the container 11. The latter is effected by lifting a knob 54 which raises a lid 52 and the container 11, which are secured together by a spring 56. Pressing a plunger 55 downwards releases the spring 56 from a beading 53, and the lid may be detached and used on top of the container 10. In Fig. 1, during the heating up of the water 17, the water is prevented from passing up the tube 30 by a vent 50 releasing vapour from the container 10, until the water reaches a pre-determined temperature when the pressure rise is sufficient to overcome the effect of the vent and hot water rushes up the tube 30, passes out of a hole 47 into the container 11. A valve 63 closes a hole 62, due to pressure in the container 10, until the hot water has passed to the container 11, the heating means 22 switched off and the consequent cooling of the container causes a partial vacuum therein and the valve drops allowing the water to pass through a basket 40 containing coffee, the brew settling in the container 10. The heating means may be thermostatically controlled. The containers 10, 11, may be of stainless steel, or other material, and the base 18 be of insulating material. The basket 40 has a beaded edge 46 which is slidable laterally in beaded rails 45 and can thus be removed from the container 11. In a modified arrangement, the basket 40 and valve 63 are dispensed with, and the upper part 31, of the tube, has wire-mesh insertions through which the hot water passes into the container 11, in which the coffee is placed, the brew returning through the insertions when the partial vacuum is formed in the container 10.
