Abstract

974,839. Conditioning and attaching sole blanks to uppers. INTERNATIONAL VULCANIZING CORPORATION. May 9, 1961 [March 22, 1961], No. 16812/61. Heading B5A. A moulding apparatus comprises a pair of diametrically opposed lasts L supported above a split sole mould mounted in the support 64 for rotation about a horizontal axis. The support is movable heightwise by the handle 48 to lower the last situated opposite mould into engagement therewith. The moulding apparatus is combined with a sole blank conditioner attached to the moulding apparatus, the operation of the conditioner being effected automatically in timed relationship with the depression of treadle 46 which initiates the moulding cycle. The conditioner comprises a rectangular boxlike base 16 attached to the bed plate 10 by L- shaped brackets 14, on which are mounted frames having gable-shaped ends 21 and perpendicularly disposed legs 22. A flat heating element 18, which may be a glass plate or panel coated with an electrically conducting material is provided, the radiation therefrom being preferably of a long infra-red wavelength. A V- shaped reflector 20 is situated beneath the heating element. A grid 26 is supported parallel to the heating element 18 by two L-shaped brackets 28 attached to the legs in such a manner that they are movable heightwise as also are the legs 22 with respect to the base 16. Each of these heightwise movements are effected by slots cut in the legs 22. A second reflector 34 hinged about the upper end of the legs 22 at one side of the base, is disposed above the grid 26 and in its operative position rests on the frame 21 while in its inoperative position it is tilted upwardly about its hinges, the tilting being effected by the movement of a piston in the cylinder 44. The extension of the piston 42 acts through the linkage 40 on the arm 38 which is attached to the mid-point of the side edge of the reflector 34. A sole blank is placed on the grid 26 of the conditioner while a previously conditioned blank is placed in the mould which has been closed by the depression of the treadle 46, the lasted upper being brought into engagement with the rim of the mould. A second depression of the treadle 46 raises the bottom of the mould to bring the sole blank in contact with the lasted upper in the attaching process. During the attaching operation a sole blank, having been placed in the conditioner, is conditioned by heating for a predetermined time, the reflector 34 being moved in and out of its operative position by the action of the piston in the cylinder 44 which movement is in timed relationship to the closing and opening of the mould. The effect of radiation on the sole blank from the heater is negligible while the reflector 34 is in its inoperative position. Specification 763,847 is referred to.
