Abstract
<PICT:0345579/III/1> Waste water such as that from coke manufacture is evaporated in a boiler b under a condensing column g of sufficient height to separate the phenols and tar, and yield a distillate of tar-free water. As shown, the tower g is packed with porcelain rings o on perforated plates i and the steam finally passes through tubes m into a chamber k provided with water-outlet n. In an example, using a tower surmounted by a tubular cooler, tar water was evaporated in the boiler b and continually replenished until the water-content of the residues in the boiler was only 10 per cent, these residues forming 3 per cent of the tar-water treated.
