Nov. 13, 1929, No. 34670. Convention date, Feb. 20. [Class 7 (ii).] Pumps, actuating.-In an engine with working cylinders A arranged parallel to and around the engine shaft 10, as described for instance in Specification 223,555, [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of], each cylinder having two oppositely reciprocating pistons 13 and provided at its opposite ends with air admission ports 15 and exhaust ports 14 respectively, an exhaust gas turbine 18 and a scavenging blower 27 on the same shaft are arranged with the turbine at the exhaust end of the cylinders, and the scavenging blower at the other end. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the turbine 18 and centrifugal fan 27 are mounted on a hollow shaft 25 coaxial with the engine shaft 10. Vanes 21 direct exhaust gases against the vanes of the turbine. The fan forces air into an annular chamber 29 from which the ports 15 lead into the cylinder. Auxiliary exhaust ports 16 may be provided adjacent to the air inlet ports 15. Cylinders, cooling.-In the form shown in Fig. 4, in addition to the turbine and scavenging blower, fans 36 are mounted on the hollow shaft 25 to cool the walls of the cylinders. The fan blades adjacent to the longitudinal centre of the cylinders are larger than the blades at the ends, and the fans are left-hand fans on one side of the centre and right-hand fans on the other. Partitions separate the fans, spaces between successive partitions being alternately closed on opposite sides of the engine by walls 45 having openings 46, 47 for the ingress and egress of air. The cylinders are partially surrounded by baffle-plates 40, 41, 42. The cylinders have cooling ribs 44.
