Abstract

344,356. Rolling- mandrel supports. GRINT, W. H. and SUPERFLEXIT,Ltd., 110, Cannon Street, London. Dec. 3, 1929, No. 36989. [Class 83 (iv).] Coiling.-Tubular mandrels of considerable length which, due to their weight or other causes are subjected to a transverse load, are provided with an internal support, which extends lengthwise therethrough, bears against the interior thereof and is maintained under substantial tensile stress, the mandrel being fixed as regards movement relatively to the support in a longitudinal direction. The mandrel is thus supported against sag, whip or other distortion transversely of its length. In making flexible tubes of considerable length as described in Specification 206,046, [Class 99 (ii), Pipes, tubes, &c.], a tubular mandrel 23 which is secured in chucks 16, 22 and is rotated during formation of the tube, is prevented from sagging by passing therethrough a wire rope 24, which is secured by a screw clamp 29 at one end to a standard 10, and at the other end to a standard 11 by a link 34 and turnbuckle 33 which may be rotated to tension the rope. The mandrel itself may also be placed under tension by adjusting the headstock 14 by means of a screw 19. One or more centring sleeves 35 may also be used, particularly at the joints 36 of mandrels made up of abutting lengths. This sleeve may be a driving fit in the mandrel and may support a loose rotatable flanged liner 37 to protect the rope from abrasion.
