[Class 83 (iv).] Skew-rolling.-In a machine for straightening rods and pipes by skewrolling of the kind described in Specifications 9293/14 and 334,912, [both in Class 83 (iv), Metals, Working], the primary rolls 2, 3 are angularly adjustable and the roll bearings are encased to exclude scale &c. The rolls 2, 3 are carried by yokes 7, 8 formed with bosses 13 rotatably mounted in recesses in the frame 1 and provided with flanges 14 having arcuate slots 15 to receive studs 16 screwing into the frame for locking the yokes in angularly adjusted position. The adjustment is made by worms 17, 18 engaging teeth on the flanges 14 and rotated by a hand-wheel 20. The rolls are driven by an electric motor 21 and shaft 22 carrying worms engaging wheels 26 on shafts 27 geared by bevel wheels 28, 29 to,shafts 30 mounted in the yokes parallel to the roll shafts and geared thereto by gears 31 enclosed in casings 32. Scale is excluded from the roll bearings 33, Fig. 6, by covers 34 engaging in recesses 35 in the ends of the rolls and grooved for felt packing 36. The secondary rolls 4, 5 and pressure roll 6 are each carried by a yoke 11 having a cylindrical stem 44 mounted in a bore 43 in a slide 41 adapted to be locked in adjusted position in a longitudinal slot 38 in the machine frame 1 by a clamp plate 49 and bolts 50. Each yoke 11 is adjustable transversely of the machine by a hand-wheel 48 and screw 47 working in clamp plate 49 and engaging stem 44, the latter being keyed at 53 to a rotatable disc 51 for angular adjustment.
