Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO ROLLING MILLS (71) We, SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER AKTIEBOLAG, a Swedish Company, of P.O.
Box 15085, S-104 65 Stockholm 15, Sweden, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a rolling mill comprising working rolls, rolling housings, bearings for journalling the rolls in the rolling stand and means for adjusting and maintaining a predetermined distance between the rolls.
The simplest type of rolling mill comprises two parallel working rolls having their necks journalled in bearings mounted in a pair of housings. The whole assembly constitutes a stand of rolls. Since the distance between the rolls generally must be adjustable, the distance usually is adjusted by screws at the top of the housings turned by hand or by means of an electric motor.
Wedges may also be used for this adjustment. Also different types of corrugating rolling mills having rollers formed with surface corrugations are here included in the rolling mills according to the invention.
A considerable drawback in connection with the use of various known rolling mills and especially in connection with changing between rolls of different profiles and workpieces, is the comparatively long time periods necessary for adjusting the rolling stands, i.e. the distance between the rolls.
An incorrect distance between the rolls will give rise to an increased wearing of the rolls and/or incorrect dimensions and shape of a rolled workpiece.
It is an object of the present invention to obtain a reduction of the time for the necessary adjustments of rolling stands especially in connection with changing between different types of rolls and different workpieces.
The invention provides a rolling mill comprising working rolls, removable and stationary housing parts, bearings for journalling the rolls in the removable housing parts, and means for adjusting and maintaining a predetermined distance between the rolls wherein the rolls and the bearings, together with the removable housing parts, constitute a replaceable unit which is detachably connectable to the stationary housing parts, each bearing of one of the rolls being eccentrically mounted in a sleeve rotatably journalled in the replaceable unit, and the means for adjusting and maintaining a predetermined distance between the rolls comprising a lockable worm gear engaging a gear ring of each of the sleeves.
Wlth this design the rolls can be calibrated for one profile and one distance between the rolls and the whole unit exchanged when another profile is to be rolled, except for small adjustments effected by angular displacement of the said sleeves by the worm gears.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating two embodiments thereof and in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of an arrangement embodying the invention, Figure 2 is an elevation of the arrangement taken on line 11-11 of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a modification of the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The rolling mill shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises two working rolls, an upper roll 1 and a lower roll 2, journalled in bearings 3 carried in two housings 4, 5.
The bearings 3 of the upper roll 1 are each eccentrically mounted in a sleeve 41 rotatably journalied in the housings 4, 5.
Each sleeve 41 has a ring gear 6 in mesh with a lockable worm gear 7 which is journalled in one of the housings 4, 5.
The distance between the rolls 1, 2 is adjusted by turning the sleeves 41 and for this purpose each worm gear 7 has a control handle 8.
The lower roll 2 is driven by a hydraulic motor 9 via a shaft 10 and a flexible, readily disconnectable coupling 11.
Each housing 4, (5) is divided into two parts, viz, a stationary part 4a, (5a) and a readily detachable part 4b, (5b), in which latter parts 4b, 5b the sleeves 41 supporting the upper roll 1 are journalled as are the worm gears 7. The detachable parts 4b, (5b) are located on the stationary parts 4a, (5a) by guide pins 12, and screws 13 serve to secure the stationary parts 4a, (5a) to parts 4b, (5b).
The embodiment shown in Figure 3 differs from that shown in Figures 1 and 2 mainly in that the worm gears 7 are journalled at 7a in the stationary parts 4a', (5a'). The worm gears 7 are movable as indicated by an arrow X to engage or disengage, the sleeves 41. Before removing the detachable parts 4b', (Sb') together with the rolls 1, 2 from the stationary parts 4a', (5a') the self-locking worm gears 7 are moved out of engagement with the sleeves 41 and thereafter the distance between the rolls 1, 2 is maintained not by the lockable worm gears 7 as in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2 but by the friction between the sleeves 41 and the detachable parts 4b', (5but) supporting the sleeves 41.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A rolling mill comprising working rolls, removable and stationary housing parts, bearings for journalling the rolls in the removable housing parts, and means for adjusting and maintaining a predeter mmed distance between the rolls, wherein the rolls and the bearings, together with the removable housing parts, constitute a replaceable unit which is detachably connectable to the stationary housing parts, each bearing of one of -the rolls being eccentrically mounted in a sleeve rotatably journalled in the replaceable unit, and the means for adjusting and maintaining a predetermined distance between the rolls comprising a lockable worm gear engaging a gear ring of each of the sleeves.
2. A rolling mill as claimed in Claim 1, wherein each said worm gear is carried in a member which is journalled in the replaceable unit.
3. A rolling mill as claimed in Claim 1, wherein each said worm gear is carried in a member which is journalled in the respective stationary housing parts.
4. A rolling mill constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described and with reference to and as shown by the accompanying drawings.
