[Class 106 (iv).] In a measuring instrument in which the pointer is constrained to move in a straight line the plane of the indicating dial is disposed substantially at right-angles to the plane in which the pointer is moved by its operating member. As shown applied to an instrument for indicating the quantity of petrol in a tank an oval frame plate 1, Fig. 1, supports a diaphragm chamber 5 connected through a screwed tube 6 to a pipe leading to the bottom of the tank. A pin 7 in contact with the diaphragm is secured to the upper end of a spring 8, Figs. 1 and 4, which spring has a projection 10 engaging the short arm of a lever 11 passing diametrically through a spindle 12 and firmly secured thereto. The long arm of the lever 11 is pivotally connected to a link 14 the other end of which is connected to an arm 15, Figs. 1 and 3, on an axle 16 mounted in bearings 17 on a front plate 2. The axle 16 is arranged at right-angles to the spindle 12 and at the end opposite to the arm 15 is provided an arm 18 on which a pointer 19 is pivotally mounted. One end of the pointer 19 is bent at 23 to form an indicator and the opposite end is connected to an arm 21 pivoted on a projection 22 of the front plate 2. An oval dial plate is secured to the plate 2 in front of the indicator 23. As shown applied to a float-operated indicator the link 14, Fig. 5, is connected to a spring-controlled lever 26 to which a float-operated chain 25 is attached. In another modification as applied to an oil-pressure indicator the link 14 is operatively connected to the free end of a Bourdon tube which is in communication with the oil circulating system.
