Abstract

343,229. Pneumatic and hydraulic shock-absorbers. RULE, T. B., 45, Belgrave Road, New Moston, near Manchester. Dec. 10, 1929, No. 37808. [Class 108 (iii).] A differential piston works in two opposed coaxial cylinders of different diameter, the smaller cylinder being connected to an air chamber which provides an elastic cushioning effect in addition to the throttling effect due to the flow of liquid through restricted orifices. The differential piston d is reciprocated by an arm c on the operating spindle b and the left end is of slightly larger diameter than the right end. The right-hand cylinder communicates with the air reservoir l through an opening j, the effective area of which may be regulated by a valve k adjustable from the outside. The left end of the piston is provided with serrations v through which liquid may flow when the piston moves to the left, the serrations being covered, when the piston moves to the right, by a ring-shaped valve e urged towards its seat by a coiled spring f. A passage running right through the piston is partly closed as required by the screw h. When the piston moves towards the left and covers the small radial connection c to the central reservoir, liquid flows from the lefthand cylinder through the serrations b, past the valve e, through radial holes g into the central passages and thence to the right-hand cylinder, the air in the reservoir l being thereby compressed. When the piston moves to the right the valve e returns to its seat and covers the serrations so that liquid can only flow to the left-hand cylinder, past the valve h and through the radial holes i. The action described above applies only to rapid movements of the piston since the passage c quickly brings about equalization of the pressures in the two cylinders as soon as it is uncovered by the return of the piston. In a modification the screw h may be adjusted without removing the cup u.
