[Class 40 (iii).] Picture - scanning devices or television and picture receiving apparatus are driven by synchronous motors of small output, e.g. phonic wheels, driven directly by transmitted alternating currents having a frequency equal to that of the picture or line changes. These currents are produced by the transmitting scanning device in scanning a prominent dark or bright picture edge thus producing impulses of greater amplitude than the normal picture currents. When the alternating currents have a frequency equal to that of the linechanges the number of poles of the rotor of the synchronous motor is equal to the number of picture lines transmitted per revolution of the motor and when a Nipkow disc is employed the number of said poles is equal to the number of holes in the Nipkow disc.
