Abstract

341,364. High-tension switches. INTERNATIONAL GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Inc., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges.; 2, Friedrich Karl Ufer, Berlin.) April 28, 1930, No. 13025. Convention date, April 27, 1929. [Class 38 (v).] Vacuum switches have the elastic wall portion of the casing, through which the operation is effected, itself enclosed in an evacuated container in order to reduce the forces necessary to operate the switch. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the metal bellows 3 which closes the end of the vacuum chamber proper 1 and carries the movable contact member 5 is itself enclosed within a container 2 evacuated to a pressure of a few millimetres of mercury. The contact member is operated by a rod 9 carrying a snail cam 8 bearing on a roller 11. The closing action takes place slowly against the action of the spring 7, but to open the switch the cam is taken past its extreme point and the spring produces a rapid break. The contact member may be operated by a lever extending through a second metal bellows arrangement on the casing 2 and locked in the closed position by a pivoted latch which is tripped by the same lever. Alternatively, the switch may be operated to the closed position by admitting air through a two-way valve to the second chamber, and opened by exhausting the chamber again.
