Abstract

341,176. Filters. PONTOPPIDAN, C., 48, Vejlesovej, Holte, Denmark. Nov. 11, 1929, No. 34389. [Class 46.] Sludge &c. is filtered by inserting a hollow filter body in a pressure tank containing the sludge and after a filter cake of the suspended material has been deposited on the filter body the filter body is withdrawn from the pressure tank through an opening the wall or edge of which fits like a stuffing- box around the filter body and the cake deposited thereon. A filter body comprising a perforated pipe 1, Fig. 1, covered with filter cloth is inserted in a tank 3 by means of a piston-rod 2. Sludge enters by a pipe 4 and the tank is exposed to pressure whereby liquid is expressed through the filter body and escapes through the end of the pipe. When the filter cake formed on the filter cloth is of sufficient thickness the filter body is withdrawn from the tank through the packing 5. The filter cake is scraped off as the pipe passes the scraper 6. The filter body together with the filter cake deposited thereon may be passed through another closed chamber and therein treated with heated air &c. Two pressure tanks may be placed in series, the filter body passing from one to the other. The pressure tank may have a packing at both ends and the filter body be moved to and fro through the tank. The filter body may comprise an endless member 1, Fig. 5, supported and driven by drums 13, the pressure tank 3 being fitted with packing devices at the points where the filter body enters the tank as well as where it leaves. Various forms of stuffing-box are described e.g. the stuffing-box may comprise an annular collar 7, Fig. 2, fitted on the inside with a rubber ring 8 which by means of a pipe 9 may be subjected to pressure; the collars 7 may have a number of openings 10, Fig. 3, so that the pressure in the tank itself acts on the rubber ring 8; or the stuffing-box may comprise a device somewhat resembling an iris stop.
