Abstract

129,905. McCaskell, J. A. Nov. 21, 1918. Rotary filters.-Liquids, especially slimes obtained in metallurgical processes, are filtered under pressure through a rotary drum, from the surface of which the solids are continuously removed by a, scraping device provided with means for removing them from the casing containing the apparatus without loss of pressure. Means are also provided for blowing air through the filtering medium to cleanse it. The surface of the drum 12 is divided by strips 13 into annular or longitudinal compartments 12<1>, over which is stretched the filtering-cloth 12<2>. These compartments communicate by pipes 16 with longitudinal passages 15 in the shaft 10 carrying the drum. These passages open on the surface of the shaft as shown in Fig. 5, the upper part of the shaft being covered by a casing 102, but the lower part being uncovered to allow the liquid to flow into a funnel 30. Part of the shaft is covered by closely fitting blocks 27 pressed against it by springs, and between the blocks opens a pipe 35 by which compressed air can be supplied to clean the filter surface. The passages 15 open at the end of the shaft 10 and are there provided with lift valves operated by a cam so that the passage through which air is being supplied is closed, the others being open. Washing water is sprayed against the drum through nozzles 24. Filtered material is scraped from the surface of the drum by the edge of a trough 17, Fig. 3, containing a screw-conveyer 18 by which the material is delivered to a cylinder 22, Fig. 7, in which reciprocates a double piston 21, which delivers the filtered material to each of two openings 23 alternately without permitting the air to escape. Agitators are provided in the casing 1 of the apparatus, which has a hinged cover with a locking-device. Liquid is supplied to the casing 1 by a pump driven by an electric motor, the supply of current to which is regulated by a float in a chamber communicating with the casing 1.
