Abstract

3171. Brownson, J. H. Feb. 9. Filter-presses and pressure filters; filters, cleansing.-Filtering-apparatus comprises a cylinder A formed with vertical channels on its inner surface or provided with a lining of corrugated metal. Liquid supplied to the interior filters outward through a cloth c held between wire gauze or perforated plates. The separated solid matter is removed by the screw g and passed through a chamber i to a valvecontrolled outlet. The cylinder A may be built up of vertical sections having flanges which are bolted together; and the cloth c may also be in sections, the longitudinal edges being held between the flanges of the cylinder sections. A pump for supplying the liquid to the filter is provided with connexions so that it mav withdraw to waste a reverse flow for cleansing the filter cloth. Forms of the apparatus are shown in which the screw g is formed in part as a brush, and in which it is replaced by helically-arranged blades. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 15, the solid matter is cleared from the filter cloth by means of a reciprocating piston. Hot water or steam may be supplied to the apparatus for cleansing purposes. Kieselguhr or sand may be deposited in the interstices of the filtering-medium. Apparatus for briquetting the solid matter may be combined with the filter. When thick glutinous liquid is to be treated, a perforated outer casing may be used.
