Abstract

512,148. Filters. BOTTARO, G. March 1, 1938, No. 6476. Convention date, March 1, 1937. [Class 467 Used lubricating oils are purified by passage without pressure or suction through a layer of porous material on the surface of which a thin layer of the impurities adheres by adsorption. Excess of impurities collecting on the surface is removed without disturbance, of the thin layer. Porous stone or tissues of asbestos, glass, nitrated or acetylated cellulose or vegetable fibres may be used. It is suggested that these substances have an electrical charge of opposite sign to that possessed by the impurities in the oil. Fig. 2 shows apparatus comprising two purifying elements in the form of candles 6 in a tank 7. The impure oil is poured into the candles and the purified oil is allowed to pass away freely from their outer surface. Electrical heating elements 9 automatically controlled by a regulator 11 are provided. A piston 16 is attached to an endless chain passing over a pulley 20 on a shaft 21 and a pulley 24 within each element. When drawn downwardly the piston removes the excess impurities from the inner surface of the element and forces them out through a valve 32. The piston is provided with a valve which closes automatically during downward movement of the piston but opens as the piston rises. The apparatus shown in Fig. 4 comprises a layer 52 of porous material on wire netting 51 and a perforated plate 50 below which another layer of wire netting or an electrical resistance 48 is arranged. The impure oil is poured on to the upper surface and the purified oil passes through apertures 59 into a central pipe 54 and is discharged through a siphon 45. Clear oil is supplied through the upper end of the pipe 54 to load the siphon. Excess impurities are removed from the upper surface of the medium by knives 38 turning on the tube 54 as a pivot and supported by a roller 39 on the rim of the container. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 512,149. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
