[Class 106 (ii).] In yielding shaft couplings, applicable as transmission dynamometers, of the kind in which relative rotation is resisted by a centrifugal system, one or more pairs of massive links are pivoted to arms on the spaced adjacent ends of the shafts, the links of each pair being pivotally connected at their mid-points, which coincide with their centres of gravity. The arms 2, 21, 3, 31 on the coupled shafts 1, 1<1> are preferably in the form of disc cranks, the links 6, 61, 7, 71, also preferably of disc form, begin pivoted thereto on pins 4, 4<1>, 5, 5<1> and centrally connected together at 10, 11. Holes 8, 81, 9, 9<1> are provided to balance the crank-pin holes. The angular yield of the coupling is positively limited by interference of the " links." By measuring the speed of rotation and angle of lag of the driven shaft, the power transmitted can be accurately calculated from a formula given. The device allows parallel misalignment of the shafts and, due to play in the joints, a certain degree of angular misalignment. A single pair of " links " and crank arms, with preferably adjustable balance-weights, may be used, in which case, unless the effective length of the links is less than that of the crank arms, auxiliary means, such as a positive clutch, is necessary to facilitate starting, due to the small torque-capacity at low speed. Fluctuations in the angle of lag due to gravity effects in this form become negligible at high speed.
