Abstract
318,938. Barrington, T. B., and Sandberg, C. P. March 13, 1928. Variable-speed gearing comprises a freely-rotatable balanced member or wheel such as H, Figs. 1 and 2, which by means of a universal joint produces alternations of torque, which by a detent V<1> and ratchet V<2> produces continuous rotation in a driven shaft E which varies automatically with the load. The engine flywheel B carries freely in bearings an in clined shaft C with a cup-shaped end 0'. The cup C' has two pairs of gimbal bearings c1, c2, and c3, c,. The pair c3, c4 makes connection with the free flywheel H which supplies impulsive reactions, and the pair c1, c2 makes connection with a central shaft D to which alternating torques are imparted. The detent V<1> renders reverse impulses ineffective, while the ratchet V<2> transmits forward impulses to shaft E which are made into uniform motion by flywheel V'. In a modification as shown in Fig. 3, the impulsive torque driving flywheel H is supported on a crank C upon the flywheel B, such crank being parallel to the axis of the gearing. The double universal joint is shown at G1. In another modification, the flywheel H is supported on an inclined crank C in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 6. Differential or balance gearing.-The alternating impulses produced by the flywheel H and universal joint 0, Fig. 6, may both be utilized by connecting the shaft D to which the impulses are imparted through two oppositely-acting ratchets V<1>, V<2> to two flywheels V, V<3> connected to nested shafts E<1>, E, which are thus differentially driven in a yielding or balanced manner.
