[Class 83 (iv).] In a machine for bending bars, tubes &c. of the kind comprising a pair of lateral supports adjustably mounted on a transverse member and cooperating with a former reciprocated horizontally by a hydraulic jack connected by tie rods to the transverse member, this member rests on the ground at least at its extremities and forms with the jack a triangular support so as to avoid the use of a bed plate &c. The movable die 6 is held by a flat 5 and shoulders 7 in a notch in a slide block 3 carried by the rod 4 of an hydraulic jack 1, secured to a base plate 2 forming a guide for the block 3. The fixed supports 9 are pivoted on pins 10, which pass through holes 14 in a pair of channel-section cross bars 15 and two pairs of tie-bars 11 pivoted at 12 to the jack body. The lower bar 15 is provided with a tenon fitting in a guide secured to the lower face of the base plate. The liquid tank 19 of the jack communicates with a chamber 22 closed by a spring valve 24 and the cylinder of the driving piston 23, 30 communicates with the cylinder of the driven piston 20 by a valved chamber 25. The piston 20 is returned by a spring 29 when the cock 28 is opened. When bending large pipes, the piston 23 may be operated independently by a lever, the piston 30 being fixed to the body. For reducing the gear ratio for rapidly bending smaller tubes the piston 30 is secured to the piston 23 by spindles 31 engaging bayonet slots in a socket 32 secured to the piston 23.
