Abstract
340,091. Softening water. UNITED WATER SOFTENERS, Ltd., PEMBERTON, R. T., and LAWRENCE, H. S., Aldwych House, Aldwych, London. Nov. 7, 1929, No. 34035/29 and 6110/30. [Class 46.] To regenerate the base-exchange material of water-softening apparatus a rigid rod or cartridge of salt is inserted into a tube or pipe and water passed therethrough to dissolve the salt and carry it to the base exchange material. The apparatus may comprise a cylinder a with base b and cap c, which may be moulded d of ebonite or like material. The base comprises an inlet passage d connected by a hose to the supply pipe and water passes from the inlet upward through a pipe e, through perforations k, and then downward through base-exchange material h and is delivered through a pipe o. The cover is provided with a cap g, through which, when regeneration is necessary, a rod f of regenerating salt is inserted into the pipe e. A hollow rod of solid salt may be used, but the salt may be in the form of grains or tablets enclosed in a suitable container having part at least of its walls permeable. Thus the container may be of openwork, or it may be of waterproof paper, the ends being closed by discs of solid salt or other soluble material.
