Purifying liquids. -A tank for softening water by base exchange is connected to a tap or similar supply by a two-way fitting adapted to give a direct outlet or to cause the water to pass through the tank. A suitable fitting, Fig. 2. comprises a tubular portion 16 of rubber or of metal lined with rubber for connection to the tap, a small outlet 17 for connection by means of a flexible pipe with the softening tank, and a direct outlet 18 fitted with two slotted plates 20, 21. The plate 20 is fixed while the lower one 21 can be turned about a pivot 23 by finger levers 25 and is normally held by a spring 24 in the position in which the slots in the plates are in register. The spring also holds the lower plate against the upper one and thus provides a safety device against excess pressure through the outlet 17. This arrangement may be replaced by a spring controlled butterfly valve, or a rubber plug may be used to close the outlet 18. The two-way fitting may be connected directly to the inlet of the softening tank and by a flexible tube to the tap. In the softening tank, Fig. 1, the water passes from the inlet 2 up a passage 6, through perforations 7 down through base exchange material, through perforations 8, up a passage 9, and down a passage 10 to an outlet. The tank 1 may be of metal or of moulded artificial resin or ebonite substitute The passages 6, 9, 10 may be moulded in the walls of the tank. The baseexchange material may be sub-divided by perforated horizontal discs.
