Abstract
339,510. Kr³ger, S. A. Dec. 21, 1929. Purifying liquids. - In water-softening apparatus in which the flow of water through base - exchanging material 2 in a tank 1 is controlled by a multipleway valve A capable of adjustment either for softening, or flushing, or regeneration, automatic regeneration is obtained by communication of the filter tank with a vessel 3 containing regenerating liquid through a check valve 4 adapted to be opened by the pressure of the regenerating liquid when the pressure of liquid in the filter tank is decreased by cutting off the supply of hard water. The check valves 4 remains closed as long as the tank 1 is maintained full of liquid. The valve A has five outlets connecting with an outlet waste pipe 7, a hard water supply pipe 9, a pipe 11 leading to a funnel 12, a discharge pipe 14 for softened water, and a pipe leading to a distributor 21. Two pairs of the outlets can be connected simultaneously. A rose 16 over a salt container or sieve 3 may be connected to and fed from the discharge pipe 14 by means of a float valve 17 operated by the level of liquid in the vessel 3. For the purpose of regeneration, the valve is adjusted so that it connects the distributor 21 to the waste 7 in order to run off water from the tank 1, and also the supply pipe 9 to the discharge, pipe 14, thus cutting off further supply to the tank 1. The check valve opens on release of the pressure in the tank 1 and cornmunication with the regenerating liquid is thus established. As the level of the latter in the vessel 3 falls, the float valve 17 opens and hard water passes into the sieve 5 thus forming more salt solution for regenerating. During the processes of softening and flushing the check valve remains closed owing to the tank 1 being kept full of liquid. The valve A can be adjusted so that the hard water may flow either from the pipe 9 to the funnel 12, then through the material 2, the distributor 21 and thence to the pipe 14 as softened water, or else, for flushing, in the reverse direction through the material and finally to the waste pipe 7 instead of to the pipe 14.
