Abstract

437,863. Softening water. MARSH, H. M., 49, Proctor Boulevard, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Feb. 18, 1935, No. 5231. [Class 46] In regenerating the zeolite bed of a water-softener the bed is first backwashed with fresh water, then salt solution is passed into the tank below the top of the tank but just above the normal level of the bed and water is drawn from the bottom of the tank by a water-actuated ejector so that the salt solution is drawn into the bed. Part of the salt solution may be reclaimed for use in a later regeneration operation. Hard water from a main 57 can be passed either to the bottom or the top of the softening-tank 50. The top of the tank is connected to a waste pipe 58 and the bottom of the tank to a soft water main 56. After back-washing, a valve 2 is opened and reclaimed brine stored in a tank 1 passes through a pipe 5 and a distributer 32 just above the top of the bed 64, the brine being drawn downward through the bed by hard water passing from the main 57 through an ejector 11 to a waste pipe 40. The suction side of the ejector is connected to the bottom of the tank 50 by a pipe 10. After passage of the desired amount of reclaimed brine from the tank 1, a measured amount of fresh solution is drawn from a tank 7 through a valve 3. The solution is forced out of the bed by admitting hard water at the top of the tank 50 and caused to flow up the pipe 10 which delivers it to a tank 27 having an outlet 28 to a funnel 43 leading to waste. Part of the solution passing up the pipe 10 is byepassed through a constant level tank 16 to a bucket 20 counterbalanced on a lever 22. The bucket is normally filled to the level of an overflow pipe 21 and when the specific gravity of the liquid rising through the pipe 10 increases sufficiently to cause the bucket to move downward and close the outlet 28 from the tank 27, the liquid rises in the tank 27 and overflowing a weir 41 is delivered to the tank 1. A portion of this solution may pass from the weir to a funnel 30<a> and through a pipe 30 to the tank 7. When the tank 1 is full, a float 42 therein opens an outlet in the tank 16 so that solution ceases to flow to the bucket 20 and the bucket is discharged by a siphon 33 and returns to its normal position and the outlet 28 is opened. Specification 435,589 is referred to.
