Abstract

338,473. Mannesmannr÷hren-Werke. and Wefing, A. March 31, 1930. Testing strength of pipes. - Relates to apparatus of the type wherein the tube to be tested is secured between two cross-heads mounted upon a bed in such manner that fluid under pressure may be admitted into the tube and consists in arranging that the movable cross-head is clamped to the bed by fluid pressure. The tube a to be tested is introduced into an annular opening in the fixed head A whilst a movable head B is provided with an annular opening l for the other end of the tube. The head B is provided with rollers e running oh rails f on the bed. Both heads are provided with a packing ring b and the pressure fluid is admitted through a valve m in the head A. A second valve n is provided in the head A to release air or pressure fluid when required. The opening l is in communication with the closed end h of a cylinder in which a piston c works. The piston is normally held clear of the rails f by springs d<2>, but on admission of pressure fluid to the tube a the piston c is forced down to engage the rails f and then the frame of the head B is forced upward so that clamping portions g grip the under side of the rails.
