Abstract
310,586. Parkes, G. B., and Taylor, C. H. Feb. 11, 1928. Testing strength and efficiency of pipes and the like by fluid-pressure. - Apparatus for testing hollow bodies &c. 15, Fig. 1, for leakage or porosity comprises a piston 4 mounted in a cylinder 3 and a pipe 17 for admitting compressed air to the said cylinder, some of the air being utilized to force the piston outwardly to clamp and seal the article to be tested between a frame 1 and a support 8 mounted on a hollow rod 6 carried by the piston and the remainder passing through the rod 6 into the said article. The cylinder 3 is mounted upon the frame, while the support 8, which is provided with an air passage 13 as shown, is faced with rubber &c. pads 9. The frame 1 is provided with a bolt 16 to form an adjustable work abutment, and slots 14 to receive pads 18, 22 when testing a plug cock casing, Fig. 3, for example, while the apparatus may be pivotally mounted on the side of the testing tank and held normally above the surface of the water by springs or a counterweight 37, Fig. 7. For testing pipes, apparatus comprising a pair of cylinders 3, 3<a>, Fig. 8, mounted on end plates 39 and each housing a piston carrying axially-bored rods 6 and circular pipe supports 8, and a stop 43, carrying seatings or supports 45 for the other ends of the pipes, is used. The diameter of the cylinder 3 is greater than that of the cylinder 3<a>, the larger cylinder being used for testing pipes of comparatively large diameter and the smaller for small pipes. The end plates 39 and stop 43 are mounted, the latter adjustably, upon two parallel rods 31, and the end plates are further fixed to a bar 40 adapted to turn in brackets 41 upon the side of the testing tank. Means for supporting the pipes at intervals along their length are also described.
