Abstract

337,965. Nyrop, A. Nov. 1, 1929. Density separators; discharging.-A centrifugal separator has co-axial relatively rotatable elements one of which carries a worm to expel sediment; the separator is driven by a single shaft in such a manner as to permit relative movement between the elements to render the worm operative. The nut 20 secures together the parts 15, 14 which are carried by the spindle 10; the part 15 may carry a pile 16 of discs, or a filter, and its upper end is fixed to a cover plate 17 provided with helical threads 3 which work on the inner surface of the bowl 4. The spindle 10 is connected to the driving shaft 1 by bevel gearing 6, 7, 9, and as a result of air friction or lag due to the inertia, of the liquid, the bowl 4 will rotate at a lower speed than the plate 17. The air friction may be increased by the provision of fins on the bowl 4, and retardation of the bowl may also be obtained by means of a mechanical or electromagnetic brake 55. The pitch of the helical threads 3 is increased as the diameter diminishes to prevent a decrease in the area of flow open to the solids. The liquid for treatment is admitted through the passage 40, and after treatment the light component of the liquid is discharged from the outlet 42, the heavy component through the outlet 41, while the solid material is carried by the worm 3 to the outlet 43. In the modification shown in Fig. 4. the bevel wheels 9, 6 are of different sizes, and the area of the helical thread 3 increases as its diameter diminishes. In other modifications the bowl is of cylindrical construction, and the bevel gearing is replaced by worm gearing. In the modified form shown in Fig. 8 a helical conveyer 25 co-operates with an inner screen 24 to assist the discharge of any solid matter which is lighter than the liquid dealt with; the outlet 43 may be regulated by means of discs 45, 46. The sludge outlet may be arranged at the lower end of the bowl.
