Description

Dec, 1,1925. 1,563,491 1 H. P. HOYLE CENTRIFUGAL SEPARATOR Filed July 12,
flirwentor v HENRY PATRICK HOY'LE By his Attorneys Patented Dec. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES- HENRY PATRICK I-IOYLE, OF DURHAM, ENGLAND.
CENTRIFUGAL SEPARATOR.
Application filed July 12, 1923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY PATRICK HoYLn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 46 North Bailey, Durham, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Separators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates principally to apparatus for separting solids from liquids, but such apparatus may be used for separating liquids of different specific gravity from one another.
According to this invention the apparatus comprises a centrifugal distributor which rotates within a rotating vessel, and means for discharging the heavier portion of the charge from the vessel which portion is driven against the sides of the rotating vessel by the action of the distributor. The rotating vessel is preferably a truncated cone and is provided with a worm driven at a different speed fromthe rotating vessel for discharging the material deposited upon its inner surface. I
The upper part of the centrifugal distributor may be connected to a sleeve having upon it a pulley by which it is rotated, and the lower part may be connected to a shaft having upon it a pinion in gear with a double pinion which also gears with a pinion on a sleeve surrounding the shaft, which sleeve carries the conical vessel.
The worm may be mounted upon the outside of the centrifugal distributor. The ma terial to be separated may be fed to a hopper provided with revolving agitators or means for supplying compressed air for agitating the material. The material passes from the hopper down a pipe within the sleeve connected to the upper portion of the distributor to the centrifugal distributor.
The accompanying drawing is a section of a separator made in accordance with this invention.
a is a hopper to which the material to be separated is fed, provided with agitators b mount-ed upon a sleeve 0 having a handle at by which it can be turned. The material is led from hopper a through a pipe e to the upper part f of a centrifugal distributor, the amount being regulated by means of a valve g. The part 7 is mounted upon a sleeve it having upon it a pulley 2' by which it is rotated. The lower part j of the distributor is connected to a shaft is having at its end Serial No. 651,086.
a pinion Z gearing with a double pinion m keyed to a shaft 12 and the double pinion m is also in gear with a pinion 0 on a sleeve 7 surrounding the lower part of the shaft l1} and carrying a conical vessel g. A worm r is fixed to the outside of the centrifugal distributor and to a boss 8 mounted on the shaft is. The bottom of the conical vessel is closed by a base plate t having outlets u for material of less specific gravity, whence the material passes to an outlet o in the base plate to. The heavier material is discharged by the worm r over thetop of the conical vessel 9 where it falls into a chute ac. shaft is is provided with thrust disks A and thrust bearings B whilst between the sleeve 3, and the plate to are ball bearings C. On the end of the shaft '11 is a centrifugal oil pump D which forces the oil from an oil well E through a pipe F to the shaft is. The conical vessel 9 is contained in a casing G mounted upon a frame H and supports a frame J in which are ball bearings K K on which the sleeve it turns, the frame J also carrying the hopper a.
It will be seen that in the centrifugal separator described the thrust on the worm r is balanced by an equal thrust on the vessel 9 in the opposite direction.
Attention is called to the fact that the feed supply is central to the distributor for which reason the balance of the apparatus is maintained, and also the distributor has a suction effect which will suck in feed, even if the hopper a is located at a lower level than the exit openings of the distributor.
