Abstract

337,641. Beatty, W. G. Nov. 29, 1929. Washing-machines with rotary stirrers. - The shaft 33 to which the stirrer hub 48 is pinned or otherwise secured is slidably mounted in bearings 20, 32 and is maintained in its lowest position, wherein a pinion 34 fast thereon meshes with a driving rack 43, by the engagement of a lever 39, which is pivoted to the shaft beyond the fulcrum 36, in the uppermost of three recesses in a vertical slot in one of the legs 9 of the supporting frame. The lever may be depressed to an intermediate recess to raise the shaft sufficiently to disconnect the drive. Upon further depression of the lever the disc portion 50 of the stirrer or projections carried thereby engages beneath a perforated annular false bottom 7 of the container of the machine so that the false bottom is raised above the normal water lever to allow the clothes &c. carried thereby to be drained when the stirrer is stationary. The false bottom is locked in this position by the engagement of the lever 39 in the bottom recess in the vertical slot. The false bottom is of a sufficient internal diameter to provide the clearance necessary for the upstanding blades 51 of the stirrer during the rotary reciprocation of the latter.
