Abstract

337,189. Gustafsson, J. R. Oct. 28, 1929. Rollers, spindles, and the like, treating.-Apparatus for grinding crank-pins on locomotive wheels and journals on wheels for railway cars, consists of a spindle 1 having a flanged end 3, which is clamped against the end of the crank-pin 2 by braces 7, 9 and bolts 8 and is held in axial alignment with the crank-pin by a pin 4 located within the spindle 1 and pressed, so that its pointed end engages the centre mark of the crank pin, by a screw 6 adjustable in the brace 7. The pin 4 is screwed to carry a nut 11 whereby the spindle 1 is pressed against the crank-pin, and on the spindle is slidably mounted a sleeve 13 carrying a rotatable member 16 and a bearing 17. The bearing 17 carries a worm wheel 19 secured to the member 16 and a worm 18 driven by a handle 22, the shaft 20 of which also is supported in a bearing 21 slidable on one of the bolts 8. The member 16 carries on a transverse slide 37, movable by a screw 38, an electric motor 35 carrying on its spindle a grinding-wheel 36, current being led to the motor by cables 33, 34, slip rings 32, and brushes; rotation of the handle 22 causes revolution of the motor and the grinding-wheel around the crank-pin. The grinding- wheel is traversed axially of the crank-pin by a screw 25 journaled in members 27, 28 mounted on the brace 7 and carrying a nut 24 connected by a link 23 to the bearing 17. A marking tool 40 carried by the member 16 is provided to assist in aligning the spindle 1 with the crank-pin and the nuts 10 on the bolts 8, or washers 12 thereon, and the heads of the bolts are provided with convex surfaces engaging the braces to allow of transverse adjustment of the spindle 1. For grinding crank-pins with a lateral projection adapted to carry an eccentric, a yoke member is provided carrying the grinding-wheel, which is driven by belt gearing from the motor.
