[Class 60.] Rotating tool apparatus.-A device for polishing journals or the like comprises a number of polishing blocks mounted on arms which are pivoted to a divided ring enclosing the work, the arms having extensions engaging notches in a spring- pressed ring which has a limited movement to feed the blocks to the work by a predetermined amount. The device may be mounted on a plate 3 secured to a lathe carriage 1 and carrying bearing brackets 4, 5 for a hollow rotatable shaft 6. This shaft is driven by a belt 8 from a driving-disc 9 connected through spur gears 12, 13, shaft 15 and detachable coupling 17 to an electric motor 16. The shaft 15 is connected through gears 27 and worm gearing 26 to a crank disc 21, which operates a pivoted lever 19 to impart a reciprocating movement to the rotary shaft 6. One end of this shaft is provided with pins 30, 31 which hold the polishing device consisting of half rings 32, 33 pivoted together at 30. For operation the two halves are held together by a spring catch 38 engaging over a pin 37. The half rings are provided with lugs 41 to which are pivoted arms 43 which are dovetailed to receive the holders 45 of polishing-blocks 46 which are somewhat shorter than the journal to be polished and are clamped in position by screws 48. Extensions 50 secured to the lever arms are urged by springs 51 into engagement with notches 52 in a pair of inner ring members 53, 54 which slide on rollers 55, 59 in the respective half rings. The inner ring members, which are in contact at 58, are urged by a compression spring 56 in a direction to close the blocks on to the work 70. In order to limit this movement a stop 61 passes through the sides of the member 33, Fig. 4, and is provided with a bevelled surface 67 coacting with the end of the half ring 54. The stop may be adjusted by a screw 65 operated from a graduated head 66.
