Abstract
167,084. Rogers, F. H., (Simmons Hardware Co.). July 29, 1920. Roller apparatus. - A machine for polishing knives comprises a buffing-roll A, Figs. III, IV, and VI, formed of radially-slit flexible e discs 3 threaded in groups upon a spindle 1. Between the groups are interposed washers of less diameter than the discs, and the whole are clamped between a collar 4 and a nut 5 on the spindle 1. Bearings 2 of the spindle 1 are carried on pivoted arms 69, which are simultaneously raised or lowered by screws 73, bevel-geared to a handrotated spindle 76. The handles of knives K are clamped between plates 15, 16 of a work-holder; yielding material, such as felt 18 and rubber 19, is interposed between these plates. A knife-holding carriage comprises spring arms 10 secured to a square part 9 of a shaft 7, which is rotatably mounted in long arms 23 pivoted at their lower ends 24. Each holder is detachably secured to the carriage by screws 13 pivoted at 14 to the arms 10, and can also be secured in a reverse position so that the opposite sides of the knives can be buffed without removing them from the holder. Cranks 51 on a shaft 50 and connecting- r( ds 25 impart to the arms 23 and hence to the holders a motion towards and from the roll A. Four pins 26 fitted to each end of the square part 9, engage guides 29, 30 during the reciprocation of the carriage. As the carriage is withdrawn from the roll, one of the pins 26<a>, Fig. X, contacts with an abutment of a lever 27 and is caused to move upwards in a circle with the pivot 28 of the lever 27 as centre, thus causing a partial turning of the carriage about its axis. The pin 26<b> moves in the direction indicated, and the pin 26<c> enters a recess 32. On the forward movement of the carriage, the pin 26<c> contacts with a camsurface 30<1> and completes the turning of the carriage through a right-angle. Thus, after each strolce, a fresh set of blades is brought opposite the polishing-roll. A pawl 34, engaging a ratchetwheel 33 on the shaft 7, prevents the carriage from turning while in its operative position. The roll A is belt-driven from an electric motor M, and in turn rotates, by means of belts, a shaft 40 and a pulley wheel 44, which drives a shaft 45 through the medium of a clutch C operated by a hand-lever 48. The shaft 45 is geared to the shaft 50 and also carries a. crank 68, which imparts an axial traverse to the roll A through the medium of a connecting-rod 67, a bell-crank 65, 63, a connecting-rod 62, and a shifter lever 60, the forked end of which engages a collar 58 mounted loosely between collars 59 rigidly secured to the shaft 1. The front of the machine is permanently closed by a plate 77, Fig. III, and, when working, a plate 78 hinged to the former can be raised and held in position by a spring catch 79.
