Turning-gear.-For an electric starter e of the screwed-pinion type, a starting switch a is operated by an electromagnet b controlled by a hand switch c, and a contact device d in the circuit of the electromagnet is not closed unless the ignition apparatus is in a retarded position. When ignition is effected by a magneto o, Fig. 3, the insulated front cover ! i of the interrupter housing g is hollow and encloses contact pieces j, k in the circuit of the electromagnet. When the housing g is rotated by means of a handle to retard the spark, a stud m bearing against the contact j passes beneath a fixed spring arm n by which the cover i is held in position, and the circuit of the electromagnet is thus closed. In a modification, Fig. 6, in which coil ignition is employed and a housing g containing the interrupter and carrying the distributor r and driving spindle s is rotated in a bearing t by means of a lever u, a pair of contacts such as j. k, Fig. 3, are enclosed in a box v on the housing g. When the housing is rotated to retard ignition, the contacts are brought into engagement by the stud m, which strikes a fixed projection w on the bearing t. Specification 105,294 is referred to.
