Frames; casings.-V-shaped steel forgings of rectangular, T-shape, double T-shape, or angular &c. section transmit forces from the cylinders 3 to the crank-shaft bearings 2 of an internalcombustion or other engine. Stiffening or bracing members connect the rest of the frame to the forging by bolting, welding, or riveting. The open end of the U member is closed by a liner or insertion. Spaces may be provided for the circulation of cooling-medium. The cylinders are connected to the member 1 by bolts 6 passing through bosses. The end bosses are cast in one with the cylinder units, the bosses between adjacent cylinders are formed in halves secured by bolts 9 and lugs 8. The caps 16 of the bearings are held against the brasses 2 by keys 17 engaging grooves in the cap and V-shaped member. At its upper end the U member is closed by a liner 18 of double T cross-section so arranged that the flanges constitute the guides 19 for the crossheads 12. Cooling-medium is circulated through spaces 20. The member may be used as a cross-head guide. The frame and U member are connected by a lattice-like series of plates 23. The lower part of the structure forms a bed 24, the plates being secured by ties 25. A sheet-metal casing 26 with doors 27 may enclose the moving engine parts. The marine engine, shown is supported on a bearing surface 24 between which and the double bottom of the ships are arranged rails 28. A light metal casting may be used instead of the structure 23. In small engines, the cylinder and U member may be in one. Modified constructions of U members made of T, channel, double T or H section with similarly varied liners, are described.
