Straightening.-The screw-operated non-rotatable ram 2 of a straightening or cupping machines, e.g. as described in Specification 316,487 is provided with ram heads 11 of different heights which can be swung into or out of position by a clamping lever 13 so that different heights of work can be accommodated. The ram also carries a stop motion bolt 15 adjusted as desired to engage a lever 19 and unclutch the drive when a certain deflection is obtained. The deflection is indicated on a dial 7 by top and bottom feeler pins 9 acting through a lever system 30. The ram is raised by a spring or a weight 70 and rope or chain 76. The work holding table is provided with a number of alternative table tops to accommodate various kinds of work. Fig. 6 shows a table with shaft holding centres 33 pivoted at 34 and with height adjusting screw 40. The centre can be swivelled out of the way to allow a rest 42. Figs. 6 and 9, for plates to be raised up by means of the wedge 51 slid by hand lever 56 and eccentric 54. The downward thrust of working is received by another incline 60 or block 59 which is adjusted to suit the position of the wedge 51. For centreless round articles to be straightened, the wedge 51 is moved in the other direction by lever 56 thus lowering table 42 and raising rollers 44, Figs. 8 and 9. on which such work rests. this support being locked in position by nut 43E. Cupping. - For cupping small metal articles, such as pan lids, the ram head is provided with a fork 64 embracing a rotatable capstan head 65 with receivers 66 for carrying a number of dies. A screw 67 or pin secures the capstan head in any die position. Corresponding dies are fixed in the press bed.
