Abstract
336,811. Elkington, H. D., (Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij). Feb. 17, 1930. Butanol and higher alcohols are obtained by subjecting ethanol vapour under pressure and in the presence of a catalytic mass comprising magnesium oxide together with a smaller quantity of copper oxide, to temperatures sufficient to maintain all the ethanol in the state of vapour, but not exceeding 400‹ C. and preferably not greatly exceeding 325' C. The pressures employed are preferably high, for example, 130-300 atmospheres. The catalysts preferably contain about 20 or 40 per cent of copper oxide and the remainder of magnesium oxide. Unconverted ethanol may be separated from the reaction products and used again, and in this way the process may be made continuous. An example is given. Specifications 282,448, 287,846, and 326,812 are referred to.
