Abstract

336,785. Burrows, H., and Bager, L. Oct. 12, 1929. Screens for intercepting heat. - A portable shield for protecting firemen comprises front, side, and head panels a, b, c of fire-resistant material. such as aluminium enclosing a layer of asbestos. The panels are provided with heat-resistant windows g and hinged together as at d, d<1> to allow of folding up. Carrying handles f are provided inside the shield, and hinged struts are arranged outside to improve its stability. Detachable stays may be arranged inside, and wheels or skids may be provided on the lower edges of the panels. An aperture h in the front panel is provided for the projection of a hose nozzle, and can be closed by a sliding shutter. Additional apertures may be provided for hand extinguishers. Spray pipes may be disposed along the upper edges of the shield to furnish a water screen in front of it. An adjustable support for the nozzle k is carried by a plate s held on the front panel by lugs t. It comprises a two-part sleeve m<1>, m<2>. The upper part has a ball and socket connection with a screw p, and the lower part is connected by a vertical pivot to a block u slidable along curved guides v. This arrangement allows horizontal and vertical adjustment of the nozzle. The latter is fixed by tightening the screw p. A jet may be directed downwardly by reversing the plate s on the lugs t.
