Abstract

336,520. Spencer, H. W. Jan. 28, 1930. Walls ; crowns and roofs.-In a lining for furnace walls, arches, and the like composed of separate units each of which engages adjacent cooling tubes, each unit comprises, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a refractory element a composed of material such as firebrick, a heat conducting element b engaging the tubes f independent of the refractory element and composed of material such as silicon carbide and also means for securing the unit to a fixed part of the furnace structure consisting, as shown in Fig. 1, of a bolt d having a head d' engaging with a recess c in the element b, a bridge e threaded on the bolt d and engaging with the tubes f and cotter pins or wedges g passing through a slot in the bolt and engaging with the bridge-piece to clamp the units against the tubes. As shown in Fig. 2, the cotters or wedges g engage with girders h, and as shown in Fig. 3 the bolt d is supported by a hook k and bracket l mounted on a tube n, and is particularly adapted for furnace roofs. A modified form of unit, which may be secured to the tubes by way of the means shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is shown in Fig. 4 and consists of a, heat-conducting element b having an aperture o for the bolt d and a refractory element a having a recess a<1> for receiving the head of the bolt. Plastic cement of the same material as the heatconducting element is interposed between the heat-conducting element b and the tubes f.
